Strand Street

Reintroducing the Oldest Street in Port Elizabeth—Jetty Street
Two new focal points were introduced as beacons at either end of the great staircase—firstly the Fishbone Sculpture and secondly the Water Feature at the base of the stairs. This reinforced the link to the Campanile and harbour beyond.
The project brief was to reintroduce the oldest street in Port Elizabeth-Jetty street- as a pedestrian connection between Govan Mbeki avenue and Strand Street. The project needed to reinforce place making to encourage people to live out onto Vuyisile Mini Square. Elements of the ocean were reflected in the curvy lines in the paving, juxtaposed against the ridged grid system of the city. Ship masts were used as advertising posts to create a nautical feel.
