The Kromme River House

A holiday home for the clients and their family to escape the urban hustle, the design of this house is centred on two main driving factors: Family living, and response to site on the river’s edge.
A courtyard typology was used to shield against the South-westerly and North-easterly predominant winds. This creates a sheltered central area where the main family spaces can live out onto and exploit the heart of the site. On approach, the views of the Kromme River are first denied as you enter the home and then become revealed as you move through to the main living and entertainment area. This space is both the heart and hearth of the house where the family comes together.

The living and dining room are stepped lower to induce a subtle intimacy with the river’s edge. The house preferences the south facing views with the bedrooms and main living space facing the river side. The living and dining room together with the master bedroom project forward to capture views of the river mouth to the South East. North facing top light windows were introduced to bring in warmth and light. The eaves above the North top light windows regulates the summer and winter sun. The tightness of the circulation spaces are contrasted by the higher volumes of the bedrooms and main living area. The main living space separates the children’s bedrooms from the master bedroom wing to heighten privacy. The Children’s bedrooms are centred around a snug games room, which serves as a secondary node where the family can come together.

Mention must be made of the collaborative spirit between the Consultants, Client and Contractor who all come together to bring to life a design which fulfils the client’s desires and thoroughly exploits the potential of this unique site.
